14/4/2008MEET OUR LITTER HEROES

SCHOOLKIDS have shown that they won't shirk from keeping Glasgow clean.

It's a year since the Clean Glasgow campaign was launched by the city council and schools, community groups, businesses and individuals were rewarded for their efforts at the campaign's first awards ceremony at the City Chambers.

There were more than 100 nominations made from the public but the main school awards went to St Stephen's Primary in Sighthill and Lourdes Secondary in Cardonald.

Lourdes' deputy principal Vincent Raeburn said: "The pupils completed a clean-up within their school grounds and then moved onto Paisley Road West."

They made a DVD of their clean-up which will be shown to other schools.

Elsewhere, the Best Pupil Participation award was won by Notre Dame High; Best Open Space Project by Hollybrook Secondary; Best Working Partnership award went to Whitehill Secondary and Best Innovative Project St Cuthbert's Primary.

The overall winner was Jonathan McAllister, 17, of Knightswood, who has organised clean-ups across the city. He said: "I'm still hard at it giving out promotional stuff and making sure people know about it."

Lord Provost Bob Winter hailed the Evening Times for backing the campaign.
